The position is full time March – November and part time December – February. Weekend work required during season.
The ideal candidate will have horticulture degree (AA or BS) and experience in a container nursery. Retail sales experience is a plus. Candidate must be comfortable interacting with the public and have a strong interest in native plants and ecological landscaping.
Position will include propagation and overseeing general health of over 300 species of native plants grown in container in our 10-acre nursery. Position will oversee potting activities and must know or be able to learn specific growth requirements and propagation protocols for species native to mid-atlantic area. Position is responsible for identifying and responding to insect and disease issues with the crops, using IPM practices.
Activities will include potting, weeding, watering, loading and unloading plants, moving container plants using wagons, helping customers, using a cash register, taking cuttings, collecting seed, sowing seed, growing plants from cuttings, and monitoring irrigation.
The nursery manager is part of a team of 3 full time (seasonal) staff and several part time retail associates.
Candidate should be familiar with basic potting procedures for perennials, trees, and shrubs in a container nursery. Candidate should be comfortable using a cash register as well as EXCEL, WORD and email. This is an outdoor position and candidate must be willing to work outdoors in summer heat.
